Erik Hoffmann (b. 1952, Leoben, Austria) is a contemporary realist painter. Maybe my favorite portrait artist ever. He is known for his evocative portraits and contemplative landscapes. He studied free painting at the Kunsthochschule Kassel in Germany from 1975 to 1981, where he later taught portrait painting. Hoffmann’s work combines careful observation of nature with a poetic sense of composition, often placing solitary figures within expansive landscapes that feel both familiar and imagined.

Drawing on outdoor studies and sketches, Hoffmann constructs scenes that blend realism with subtle narrative tension. His paintings explore themes of presence, isolation, and the quiet relationship between human figures and the natural world. Influenced by modern realist painters such as Alex Colville, his work is marked by precise draftsmanship, restrained color palettes, and a calm, meditative atmosphere. Almost perfect.

Hoffmann has exhibited widely in Europe, and his work is held in private collections internationally. He has lived and worked in northern Germany and on the Scottish island of Barra, environments that have deeply informed the mood and landscape elements of his paintings.
